We're Moving!!!!The HPS website is transitioning to a new web platform, which will be available for the start of the 2017 school year. While in this transition, many of the links, photos and other web content may change or become unavailable without notice. The athletic calendar, district event calendar and building event calendars will remain active, as will the district lunch menus. The link to the new Athletics webpage and the Athletics webpage itself will be unaffected. We would like to thank you for your patience and understanding during this transition, and we look forward to providing more accessible and responsive web content in the future!
Balanced Calendar Proposal
The school districts of Van Buren County have been asked to seek input from their communities regarding a proposed new calendar system for the 2018-2019 school year. School calendars have gone mostly unchanged since the late 1800’s but in the last decade, hundreds of schools across the country have successfully implemented a balanced calendar. Why a balanced calendar? Studies show a clear loss of learning occurs for many students during summer break. Reducing the length of summer break will reduce that loss. The length of the school year (180 days) stays the same but you replace some of the summer break period with breaks during the typical year. For example, in the calendar the county is proposing, school starts in mid-August with a week off in October, February, and a two weeks at spring break.
To help you better understand a balanced calendar, we’ve provided you with several links including: the proposed 3 year calendar, and a brochure explaining the benefits of balanced calendars. I encourage everyone with an interest in the school calendar to review these documents. I’m also happy to answer your questions via email [email@example.com], telephone [621-7001] or in person.
