Message from the Principal:

It is our job to provide support and guidance to insure a positive experience in our "small school" environment. We strongly encourage new and current students to be a part of some team, club or organization within the school. This is a great way to make new or more friends and it creates ownership in the school.

The administration and staff at the High School will provide the environment that will enable our students to be increasingly effective in meeting the situations that will face our students in life.

We, as a faculty, feel that we must accept each child as an individual and challenge them to accomplish as much as possible. Our curriculum, then, must contain the required subject matter and be flexible enough to meet the child's needs.

In addition, we must offer opportunities for the students to understand themselves and the American way of life.

We hope you and your child have a wonderful learning experience this year at Hartford High School. If, at any time, you have any questions, please contact me at (269) 621-7100,  e-mail me at janickid@hpsmi.org or stop by any time.

Sincerely,

Dave Janicki

MEMORANDUM

TO: All Parents / Guardians of HS Students

FROM: Dave Janicki, Principal

RE: Fire/Tornado/Evacuation/Lock-Down Drills

DATE: November 5, 2012

The purpose of this memo is to keep you informed about your child’s safety while at school in the event that there is an emergency and to inform you of an important upcoming Evacuation Drill.

This memo outlines what we do in terms of safety drills during the course of the school year. Annually we are required by local policy, and in some cases state law to conduct:

· Six (6) Fire Drills (we do these during the fall and spring)

· Two (2) Tornado Drills (we do these in the spring

· One (1) Evacuation Drill (we do this in the fall)

· Two (2) Lock-down Drills

To date, we have conducted four Fire Drills this year. For this drill we simply evacuate the building from all available exits and get away from the building. This is done in the event that there is a fire or the possibility of smoke in our building, and fire trucks or other emergency vehicles need to get to our building.

Tornado Drills – All students and staff are moved to the interior of the building, away from all windows and in a structurally safer environment. In the event of a Tornado Warning, we will then exercise the following procedure:
**No student will be released until the tornado warning is lifted and it is determined to be safe.

Lock-down Drills – These drills will be conducted in coordination with the local Emergency Management Coordinator, local Police Department or our local Fire Department. The procedures that we have used and will use in the future have been developed utilizing this team of experts. The schools are “locked down”, as are all classrooms and offices, until it has been determined that it is no longer a situation that is unsafe for everyone.
**No student will be released until the lock-down is determined to be over and all clear.

On Thursday of this week (11-8-12), we will be conducting a complete building Evacuation Drill. This is done in the event that there is a problem with keeping students/staff on or around school property for some more serious reason. For this drill all high school & middle school students will be bused to the Federated Church.

If you have any questions about our procedures and drills, please feel free to stop in or call me at 621-7100.
